I've met people who plan their investing around natural disasters. One guy invested in companies that produce artificial vanilla, based on the expectation that a future hurricane would impact the natural vanilla producers in the pacific rim areas. He was right. A major hurricane impacted some of the biggest vanilla plantations and they couldn't deliver because of infrastructure problems. The price went through the roof. When his stocks did really well he sold out.

I agree with the idea on investing: buy the rumours and sell the news. However, I was at a Fintech public speech organized at Deutsche Bank and it looks like that in the very next months 150.000.000 euro are going to flood the Romanian market for fintech startups. Now here the focus is on on-line payments, blockchain, etc. Even DB now wants to develop some solutions in this field because they want a share of the market. Furthermore, I agree with the idea that investing now it's crazy because probably we are at a market top (ECB raised rates, 10 years from 2008, etc.). However, these crises usually last 1 to 3 years and then, when no one is talking about the good news going on in the market (as you said), boom prices soar. So with this mindset, are there genuine projects where we could collaborate as programmers (both open source or eventually with a stake) so that we can profit from the next market recovery? AI in times of crisis is a no brainer, no one wants to pay salaries, and if you are into language processing you can hunt for big money. Any entrepreneur prefers to pay a software 50.000 euro once rather than paying 150.000/yr in the form of salaries. The problem with Bitcoin is that it is tremendously slow, so it's all about coming up with something faster and more robust/secure. Even Italy has signed an agreement to finance new startups in the blockchain field (it's a matter of European grants).

I know a guy who lost 100k usd as a founder of a company when they failed to launch earlier. They pegged their company on a the value of Ether while it was high and when it crashed, he took the major hit just to refund the early investors..

True on not jumping the bandwagon. But also if a technology is well known it does not mean it is not worth pursing. Because the money is often not only in creating the tech but in adapting it and implementing it to fit different businesses needs. Example, industrial automation, well known subject massive shortage of people who can actually do it = monies. All of this to say, if you feel you have missed the trend on a subject and want to jump to the new thing, don't be bummed out because "everyone" is already on it. There's money to be made in the "mundane" tasks.

Saying that “when everybody is talking about it you should not get in because it is the end of the market cycle“ totally makes sense to me. But what do you think about stocks like Google or Amazon or even Apple where people have been talking about them for years but their stocks are still going very strong

Cryptocurrenty, especially bitcoin, is a hype that will pass. A pyramid scheme that will cause a redistribution of money. Interesting as long as it lasts. Blockchain, I don't know. It has to prove itself.
