WW1 REMEMBRANCE DAY | Honouring Unknown WW1 heroes by the Menin Gate and Thiepval Memorials

The Unknown Warrior interred at Westminster Abbey on November 11th 1920 (Remembrance Day) symbolises the countless unidentified soldiers lost in WW1 or ‘The Great War’. The initiative to honour an unknown serviceman came from Reverend David Railton, who envisioned a national tribute to those who perished in battles such as Passchendaele. The coffin was selected from the battlefields near the Tyne Cot Memorial, Menin Gate and Thiepval Memorial - areas heavily impacted by the Great War, before travelling with a solemn military escort to London. King George V presided over the burial ceremony in Westminster Abbey, marking the Unknown Warrior's final resting place as a focal point of national mourning and remembrance. This tribute inspired similar monuments like the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier at the Arc de Triomphe in Paris and the Tomb of the Unknowns at Arlington National Cemetery in the United States. These memorials serve as enduring symbols of sacrifice, honouring soldiers with no known graves but remembered eternally.
