...At a 47, he was motivated to break several technology limits to go from Carriage to Starship. Also, Austin had to have some equipment that gives bonuses to Persuasion, since the highest one can get without it is 42. And that's assuming Nat 20, Expertise in Persuasion, and 30 (+10 Modifier) in Charisma.

This reminds of an anecdote that actually happened to me semi recently in DnD. We are level 5 and the mage made this possessed (I think) suit of armor to drop its sword which is a great sword that stores the souls of the damned. The mage tried to pick it up but not only did it alter its weight not seeing him as enough of a killer to wield it but also tried to possess him. Then my character tried and I ruled a completely natural double nature 20, causing the sword to alter its weight to be literally weightless for me and the souls are more of a mild inconvenience in the back of my mind that I can just barely heard as a whisper. I could tell he wasn’t expecting the double nature 20.
So while not the same it is similar

My EX DM turned off my Race and Class Abilities in order to railroad his outcome.
Nat 20, plus table bonus of 5, plus skill bonus of 8, for 33. to bluff towards my favored foe.
I still was found out for lying. 4 times. I never rolled that well in any game and it didn't matter. He wanted me to betray the party.
