Clifton Hicks - Sourwood Mountain (WV Mountain Banjo)

I learned "Sourwood Mountain" from George Gibson of Knott County, Kentucky. My instrument is a West Virginia-style mountain banjo, handmade by myself after a 1930s original.

Heck yeah! Think I like the sound of this one the best compared to the Kentucky-style (more even in tone/volume from treble to bass, to my ear). Could be the difference in bridge position on the head being responsible for part of it (closer to the tailpiece on the Kentucky one and closer to the middle on this one). Best wishes from the eastern panhandle of West Virginia.

I gotta tell ya, I'm 53 now when 8 was oh probably in my early teens back in MI. I had a great friend who's dad played bluegrass and they took me to a outing. Being younger it felt like we drove for hours to get there, it was only like 30mins.! It was one of the most inspirational things next to my daughter in my musical life. People scattered here and there just jammin and having a wholesome time. Well as life went on played guitar, bass and sang in metal bands, never got anywhere but girls but hey! And now here I am re inspired by you young man, went with the open back and love it!! Can't play s#^t yet for some reason but I won't quit!! Thanks for bringing that back to me! And can you imagine, I was considering the accordion!! Yeah right, like Walking and chewing gum!! Bwahahaha!!! No drums either!!Lol thanks again!!! Don't ever stop!!!(sorry that was a novel!)😈🤣🤣🤣

Great playing and singing! That banjo has a great sound. I think mtn banjo's usually sound too tinny and high pitched but this one has a great warm tone. Well done!

I sure love seeing your banjo stuff.
Did anyone ever tell you you look like the actor Jeffrey Donovan? I mean it's uncanny you guys could be brothers.

Great looking instrument and great playing! Looking at the tone ring on top of the skin- did you mount the skin in a similar fashion to your recent Kentucky hexagonal banjo build or is this one attached in a different way?

You sound like Randy Travis when you sing.

Man I'd give an arm to be able to play that, mind you though, I wouldn't be able to play it then! Is there a tab?

I'm in too deep now, I can never listen to pop music again. There is an awake and alive love for all that is good and beautiful here, why would I trade that in for Taylor Swift?
