i don’t think people understand how heavy this hits after a whole entire movie that is nothing but forrest delighting in life. this moment tells us that throughout it all, he was perfectly aware of why people treated him certain ways, why they spoke to him certain ways - and he had no problem with being treated that way, because he could handle it. but the moment he thought of his son having to face everything he did, he broke down - saw it as a problem. i will forever adore tom hanks for the nuance of this scene. it broke me like a welled-up dam.

You can see the relief after he is told he is smart, when he was first told that’s all he was worried about, amazing scene and acting.

1:21 He must have seen all his struggles since he was born flash before his eyes and FEAR for the boy to experience the same thing as he is. And that instant relief when he knows his boy will dodge that faith and life will be easier for him than he was. If this is not the most fatherhood-related moment ever, then I don't know what it is.

You know theres a lot about this movie that seems so hokey or exploitive, but there are also scenes like this that are just incredibly relatable. I think every parent can relate to this scene. The wonder of meeting your child, and the inescapable fear that just by virtue of them being your child you've somehow burdened them with all your inadequacies and baggage. That you want more than anything for them to live a life free of the pain and heartaches you'd had to suffer. And finally the huge swell of pride that comes from knowing they've exceeded you, they aren't broken the same as you, they will be ok.

You don’t need to be a dad to be moved to tears by this scene but I, thank to the world, am a dad and I love it more than I could ever imagine

“He’s the most beautiful thing I’ve ever seen”

Forest hadn’t even met his son before and his first concern is his well-being. That is a father right there

I cry my eyes out every time I watch this scene. My son is turning 9 months old on the 30th of this month and he is the most beautiful thing I’ve ever seen. I’m very happy I can be the father to him that I’ve always wanted myself.

Forrest Gump is by far the saddest movie I've ever seen. It painfully illustrates how extremely harsh life is for people that are found to be not good enough. The "Is he smart?" scene is such an intense conclusion of the film: it both shows how much the protagonist has suffered from his handicap, as well as his strong fear of condemning someone to a similar suffering. This is for sure one of the best movies ever made.

“Is he smart?”
I’m on the Spectrum and this scene broke me. Because I understand the absolute fear Forest had of the chance his son was like him. Might have to deal with the same struggles. It’s the main reason why I don’t want kids. I can’t take that gamble with someone else’s future.

The way that Forest went from feeling absolute joy to being rocked with fear when Jenny told him that he was that boy’s daddy, that emotion could be felt by us all.

Then as he tentatively asked “Is he smart….or…or is he…?” and his eyes filled with tears as his lips trembled, that’s when we all knew that he was fully aware of how the world saw him, how awful he knew people treated him because of who he was, and though he knew he himself could handle it, he feared that life for his son. That part ensured not a single dry eye in the house.

“He’s very smart. The smartest in his class.” Jenny’s reassurance and Forest’s visible relief at knowing his son would be just fine, that made us all all out bawl.

Tom is such a great actor in that only saying these few words, he can create such a strong emotional reaction from us and make us really feel for Forrest Gump and all he’s been through.

This scene really encapsulates the most human version of Forrest. He is truly aware of his mental condition and he doesn’t mind it. But when it comes to his son, that’s his most vulnerable moment as he feared his son might end up the same as him.

Still brings a tear to an old heartless bastards eye.

Edit: I was born to a Vietnam veteran that later had problems. Went criminal and spent 9 years in Huntsville.
He'd say things like "I don't want you to be like me."
I had my problems. My stints in jail but I never served. I seen how what men see in war changes them.
I try and lead an honest life. Not hurt no one or do anyone foul. My fathers wish was that I be good, better. Because of the regret he had. I remember him waking up crying his eyes out and not being able to recognize me at first. I dont blame Mama for leaving us. But I never left him until he made me go.

In this moment, we realize as a audience that Forrest understood every insult, every slight, every wrong thats happened to him, and he didn't want his son to suffer as he suffered.
