Having a gay son or daughter doesn't mean you failed as a parent. It's disowning them or making change because the parents' are more concerned for their own self-image, that's when they fail.

"I'm not changing, there's no changing me. God knows I tried." I see the comments from people who don't have a religion that talk about people who are gay and religious, and here's the thing: you've never lived with a God that you consider your friend and protector. You don't know how hard it is to leave everything you love, your homophobic parents and family, your life falls to pieces around you. You can call religion the problem all you want, but you've never lived under that continual fear that you'll fall into a life of sin. I still have PTSD from the late nights of crying and reading scriptures that tell me I'm a sinner, but I also have good memories and testimonies of my church. It's hard to walk away from, impossibly so.

“You never asked if I was okay.” This is what SO many survivors say. What happened here isn’t okay and what we are doing to women in Texas isn’t okay. These are often the hardest things to speak about because they are so traumatizing - which is why you need to ask.

Lucas Hedges' best performance yet, in his most challenging role thus far, where he gives a moving and authentic portrayal of a young man trying to form his identity against his environment. Russell Crowe, as well, is in particularly fine form, here, delivering nuanced work that never turns his part into a one note caricature. Shame on the academy for overlooking these two very strong turns.

This was the a really powerful conversation, including the ending scene of him driving away with the song, I cried, pretty sure my roommate cried

I will never understand the "I won't be a grandparent" argument. Like, us gays can easily have kids too

"I may never be a grandparent" It's called adoption. But if you're held up on the whole archaic extending your bloodline thing then there's also surrogacy

Such a powerful scene! I used to be just like his father too but after watching this movie, it's changed me so much! You don't have to agree with someone's choice, but it is our responsibility to love that person no matter what. It's about unconditional love! The abuse that Jared went through at that horrible place is unbelievable!

My dad had the “no grandchildren fear” with me and I would go through adoption, which was so insane because I was adopted lol.

What I like about this movie is none of the family are “bad” people. Yes terrible things were done and it’s important to know that it’s not always just bad parents/kids when bad circumstances happened. I’m glad the parents despite taking their time learnt and listened and accepted their unintentional harm and he accepted they thought they were doing the best for him but still put up boundaries to protect. For such a sad story the ending was good. This is what I consider that most people are doing the best they can with what they have. What people have/know might not be right but most people aren’t heartless just uneducated or unaware. Yes some bad people out there but I give people initially the benefit of the doubt they were doing that they thought was the best with what they had. It’s how they react after they are given the correct information that is more important in the long run for me.

I feel like his father being concerned about having grandchildren shows where his priorities lied.

"I may never be a grandparent."

YOU may never be a grandparent? There is adoption, vitro fertilization and surrogacy. Blood doesn't need to make a family, but only love can make a family

I'm a parent to a 5 year old. I would never want my child to feel this way about me. It would shatter me to pieces. I don't understand how a parent can't just accept their child for something like this. As long as they aren't hurting themselves or others and they have a happy life, how could a parent not want their child to be happy? Stories like this break my heart. How can we be mad at our child for falling in love?

Very good performance from Crowe. He's not a one note "homophobic dad" villain. He DOES love his son and at the end I feel his "I will try" was genuine. I'm not religious in the truest sense but I can imagine going against a lifetime of following one in your head is hard for a person. And that's what he has to do for his son.

He says “you make things about you” then proceeds to talk about himself more. This father is the problem not the child

Okay but adoption and surrogacy exist...?

Lucas has come such a long way as an actor. His small role in Waves was absolutely lovely, and this I think was one of his best. He (and Nicole and Russell) did so good in this film. I also loved Troy Sivan's music in the soundtrack.
