The first Thanksgiving was declared by King Ferdinand and Queen Isabella of Spain along with the Pope of Rome. This is why it is celebrated by Catholics in Europe. They prayed to St. Santiago, in order to help them defeat the Moors of whom occupied Spain for over 700 years. When they conquered the last Moorish stronghold they fell on their faces to St. Santiago giving thanks and it was declared a religious/Catholic holiday. The Europeans had already established Plymouth Rock, and after being well established, celebrated the first Thanksgiving. When this was done, there were 1000's of indigenous people being slaughtered on the very same day. The same is true of St. Patrick's day when the Irish drove the so-called "snakes" from Ireland.

They were Puritans; Puritans believed that God made that land for them; they believed no matter how out numbered they were, they would be successful in eradicating the Tribe. They hired Dutch mercenaries; over wanting to encroach, skirmishes broke out; not really wanting to convert them, after the battle, the Puritans held a feast, thanking God for the deaths. But as a Native, I adhere to the similar Green Corn ceremony at this time, & not the ugly blot.
