I tested my brand new Faber Castell Polychromos and compared them to the Childrens Version from Faber Castell: The Colour Pencils. Watch the video and enjoy the process.

I always loved the creaminess and richness of the Prismacolor pencils, but they are difficult to use for detail. Put off by the supposed "hardness" of the FC Polychromos, I never considered them until I saw someone use them, and the colour laid down really nicely. So I bought a dozen Polys, picking my favorite colours, and was absolutely blown away. Now a convert to them.

A hello from Germany,
First of, the children colored pencils by Faber Castel are great - if used on the right paper and with something that helps to blend them.
The polychromos just work fantastic as always because they are artist grade pencils, however using cheaper pencils with something that breaks down the pigment and binder like the zest it pencil blend you might will end up with different and much better looking results when using them once again.

I’ve seen a few artists using them for portraits in the set of 60 and they look good there, but they also use other methods on how to layer them since they’re hard to layer as you already mentioned here.

Hi. Jim from Madrid, Spain (a fellow artist and a New Yorker expat living abroad).
I just found you on YouTube (this video just popped up).
As per the video...
As an Artist I use FC polychromos regularly (oil based), unlike Prismacolors which are wax based, and they are NOT considered "Professional Artist grade" due to their low Lightfastness grade (unlike other Professional Waxed based coloured pencils such as "Caran D'Ache").
Even though the initial result might be initially amazing between more expensive and cheaper coloured pencils, I mean that initially cheaper coloured pencils might be great in one drawing when used properly (and this is the same for any other Artist medium, such as paint, pastel, etc.), the problem arises with time and degradation of colours and bad lightfastness.
But it is good that you share your time and effort.
Cheers from Sunny Spain!
😁👍😎✌

I was using the Faber classic Colour pencils, as I am learning about colour pencils drawing after retiring a few months back, struggled a bit to get them on paper and blend in, then I purchased some Polychromos yesterday, I was amazed by how much of a difference there is, the Polychromos are my go to now, amazing to put down and work with. I have some Prismacolour arriving tomorrow to give them a go.
Great video, thank you for sharing.

I have a small set of Faber Castell Goldfaber pencils. I almost loke them more than my Prismacolor Primire pencils. I feel they are soft and vibrant. I also feel more control where the color goes. They are great for finer details.

I am no way a professional artist. I dont draw. I only color. I use pencils in my Bible journaling. I have a bible with illustrations that are meant to be colored. The paper is thin and some illustrations have fine details.

I'm learning how to blend colors from watching YouTube. I'm also learning about layering.

I just bought a set of Polychromos. I have yet to try them. Amazon is supposed to deliver them today.

I like having quality art supplies in spite that I'm a novice/amature. I can understand value and quality.

In time, I will get better at coloring and the quality will make the difference as they will last.

I love both my faber castell and prisma pencils. They work together well especially when i use them with solvent. Never had a breakage problem with the prismas, and i always use good paper with them. No music though please.

The red Classics are good. I think they layer forever, I had to stop after 8 layers. They are right up there with Staedtler Design Journey and Stabilo Original imho.

Excellent video!. 👌 Another implication is that children who are artistic can get discouraged using poor materials too. If they think the problem is their lack of talent, they might give up. It would be better to give them a smaller set of vibrant colours, which they can mix, than a large set of poor ones.

Don't play music while you're talking, please

Stopped watching when the loud irritating music started. Color in silence if you don’t want to talk.
