In more recent World Cups, Mascherano vs the Netherlands in the 2014 Semi final was possibly the best performance in a major World Cup game. Defenders don't get any credit, and people forget Mascherano put on a world-class performance to help drag his side to the final.

As an Englishman who was only 8 in 2006 I remember being heartbroken after that Portugal game but then watching that Zidane performance against Brazil was just incredible. I loved watching that generation of Brazilians such as Ronaldinho, R9, R Carlos, Kaka, Adriano etc but the way Zidane dominated that game was like nothing I’d seen, privilege to watch.

Zidane's performances against Brazil in the 1998 and 2006 World Cups were unreal. Some of the greatest players at the time and in history were on those pitches, and he was head and shoulders above them all. Especially 2006. Coming back from retirement and carrying France all the way to the final.

Shearer scored a lot but Rooney scored more and was a much better passer. His assist count it insane. I think you'd have to include him in a list of the top 25 or 35 players of all time. He smashed every record.

Edit: Ok so Shearer score more than rooney. Still think Rooney was better. Shearer obviously one of the best of his generation.
