Released in 1968, “Blackbird” was written by Paul McCartney and credited to both John Lennon and McCartney. The song reflects some of the racial tensions at a time when African Americans rose to protest and fight for their civil rights. “Bird” was a common term applied to a young girl and “Black Bird” was McCartney’s poetic way to define a black woman. To select a few lines expressing the struggle for civil rights from McCartney’s song:

Blackbird singing in the dead of night
Take these broken wings and learn to fly
All your life
You were only waiting for this moment to arise

Originally recorded on June 11, 1968 in the Abbey Road Studio, it was just a little over two months after the assassination of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

It is always great to listen to a classic piece reimagined and interpreted in a different way. This is not a cover but a refreshing look at an old friend, both inspiring and well informed. Thank you.

For me this reflects an interpretation that combines Bach with McCartney. Interestingly, if you listen to any interview with McCartney about Black Bird he draws a direct line from one of Bach's Bourrees (dance) to the Beatles. I think Alex capitalizes on that line and delivers a truly thoughtful reimagined interpretation that speaks volumes. Thank you for this passionate new version.
