I'm certain that most people will meet the eventual explanation with disappointment (especially the "it's aliens" people), but I kind of feel like the point is the mystery, and I think it's a nice distraction from the hellscape that has seen all of us sick and/or dying and being locked away in unending boredom (btw being sick of being locked inside is better than actually being sick, if you had any doubt about that). I'm likely to not be awed by the eventual admission of reasons people had to build and install the first one, but I am fairly certain the logistics will still be impressive to me.
