When you think about your classroom management plan, it can be easy to see misbehavior, assign a consequence, and move on. However, some student misbehavior is unintentional, and you can build student rapport by showing empathy and learning more about what motivates student behavior. In this video, there are two classroom management scenarios that allow a teacher to use positive classroom management and build a stronger teacher-student relationship.

This strategy is ideal for first-time student misbehavior in your class, or when you still need to build rapport with a student you do not know yet. It also works well for behavior management in students with a history of difficulty at school or at home. One strategy is “Flip the Script,” in which teachers show empathy for a student while correcting a negative behavior choice. You motivate the student with the power to fix their mistake rather than imposing an immediate, teacher-developed consequence. The second strategy is “History of a Desk,” which helps teachers better understand a student and the events and choices that influenced them.

How could these strategies improve active learning, and other class activities that require the reinforcement of procedures?
Which of my students will respond well to being given a second chance, and who will take advantage of it or misinterpret it? How can I plan my responses to this latter group so they understand my classroom expectations for their behavior?
How can these strategies facilitate classroom conversations about personal responsibility and learning to fix mistakes? What other strategies can I use to help students build these personal skills?
