Mine did this once. It happens when the flame dies and then you restart it without cleaning out the pellets from the fire hole. The instructions warn about this. If the flame dies for any reason (power outage etc) you have to take the food off, take the grates out, take the heat plate out, and then clean out pellets until the fire hole is empty. When you restart it the grill “thinks” this is the beginning of the smoke so it dumps a ton of pellets in to get the fire going and the grill heated up. If you don’t clean it out after the fire goes out there are already pellets in there. As a result the fire hole has roughly double the pellets it should and they smoke more instead of lighting. The smoke fills up the grill and then when it reaches a certain point it ignites quickly and basically explodes. After reading the instructions I adopted cleaning out the pellets before restarting and have not had the problem again in 3 years. Also you should never unplug the grill to turn it off. You have to switch the power to off. The fan will keep running for awhile but that is by design. It makes sure the pellets that are in there burn off so that next time you start it up you won’t have this problem.

That is actually from not cleaning out the ash pot regularly after long smoke cooks. I learned the hard way as well.

This also happens when you have a flame out. The controller will start pushing more pellets as the temp drops. Embers in the burn pot can eventually spontaneously ignite all the pellets. Seen this happen with Pit Boss and Traegers.

I had this a couple of times, I had really good customer service from pit boss but after 5 years the temperature became un stable after replacing almost every component, the unit became unreliable. My frustration took over and it is history, I’m researching other pellet smokers. Temperature sustainability and reliability is the most important thing in smoking, especially when most of the cuts of meats are expensive.

It’s from the flame cup having too many ashes and pellets and the flame doesn’t start properly
The ashes prevent the fan from feeding the fire and the ashes prevent the starter from properly igniting the pellets.
So what you get is loss of smoldering pellets that can’t get enough air to ignite… until they do

It was smoldering and the smoke was basically woodgas and the gas in the unburnt smoke is flammable.

Coming from a firefighter that smoke was telling you that it was going to do that. In the fire service that’s called a flashover.
