Mathis attended the same junior high school and high school that I attended. My string orchestra teacher in junior high was a violist in the Circle Star Theater and every spring, she would take the class on a field trip to the Circle Star to watch Johnny Mathis rehearse. After he finished a set, he would come down to the audience area where we sat and greet us.
