Markus Wolf - Alexanderplatz-Demonstration 1989

🇬🇧 The Alexanderplatz demonstration was the largest demonstration not diected by the state in the history of the GDR. The demonstration took place in East Berlin on 4 November 1989 and was the first officially authorised demonstration in the GDR that was not organised by the power apparatus. The demonstration and the final rally on Alexanderplatz, organised by staff from several East Berlin theatres, were directed against violence and for constitutional rights, freedom of the press, freedom of speech and freedom of assembly.

According to the organisers, 500 thousand to one million people took part in the Alexanderplatz demonstration. However, this figure is disputed by researchers. It is considered a milestone of the peaceful revolution in the GDR.
