In 1804 Napoleon created 18 'Marshals of the Empire', to serve as the senior officers of the Grande Armée. He created a further 8 before his abdication. A few were aristocrats, but others were the sons of shopkeepers or tailors. The most favoured became princes and kings. Among their ranks were legendary figures such as Marshals Lannes, Soult, Davout and Massena, but also much less well know figures like Pérignon, Brune and Moncey. Our series will explore the lives of all 26 Marshals, and rank them according to our own judgement of their achievements as Marshals.

Napoleon: "A thousand bullets were fired at me, but non of them found their target!"
Oudinot: "Yeah, because all of them ended up hitting me!"

“Citizens, you have been dissolved!” Has to be one of the greatest (and most hilarious) lines in history

Imagine walking through the Russian countryside and out of nowhere you see a guy on a horse with a tiger skin, velvet suit and feathers everywhere.

At his execution, Murat actually said "Aim to the heart. But spare my face".

Murat is one of the most charismatic figure of the Era.. The pinnacle of meritocracy, like Napoléon, what a destiny, I am glad we still remember these men!
A diplomat once told him when he was a king "do not forget that you started as a lad boy", he then replied "the difference between us, if you had started as a lad boy, you would have stayed one."

"So, Oudinot, how was the battle?"
"Got wounded - again, routed some guys, captured 500 men, 12 cannons, 2 standards and a ship"
"At this point I am not even going to ask how you captured a ship in a field battle."

The sculpture of Murat is in front of the facade of the royal palace of Naples as one of the most important kings for the southern italian realm. I am happy he has not been officially forgotten. His proclamation for the italian unity, although instrumental, was of crucial importance for italian history. He is buried in a very humble tomb in a church in Pizzo Calabro, the town in Calabria region where he was executed. My favourite Napoleon's marshal. Ooorah Murat!

Murat: All balls, no brains.

The perfect cavalryman.

20:14 From “La Grande Armee” by Georges Blond, translated by Marshall May (1997), page 429:
“When Victor arrived, he was met by an avalanche of reproaches [by Napoleon]… [Victor answered]: ‘Sire, I have served you since Italy. You cannot banish me from the battlefield without dishonoring me. If I have committed a military fault, I have paid dearly for it in the wounding of my son-in-law [General Chataux]. ‘ ‘Is there any chance of saving him?’ ‘No’, and Victor started to cry, and in turn, the Emperor was moved. ‘I shall take up a musket, ’ said Victor through his tears; he would join the ranks of the Guard. Napoleon held out his hand. “Well, Victor, you may stay. I cannot restore your corps, since I have given it to [General] Gerard, but I will give you two divisions of the Guard. And you will stay and dine with me.’”

I love this exchange between Napoleon and Victor - even during the grim 1814 campaign both men displayed honor and compassion.

Oudinot might not be the best marshal here but, for now, he's the coolest

Oudinot is a legit legend.. “Oudinot asked for his pistols, and from his bed, aiming through an opposite opening, began firing at the Cossacks.”

Ironically how Murat goes from commencing his remarkable career by putting down a mob to ending it being arrested in one. An old Italian lady was on the spot incandescently holding him responsible for the death of her young son. Guess that his propaganda of an "Italian independence war" proved only rhetoric to the Italians. I happen to read more about and further admire him only after this incredible Epic History TV series. Excellent.
