Henlo! I am The President of Chickenlandia and I want to welcome you to Chickenlandia, a magical place where my pet chickens (and a few ducks) live an awesome life. In this video, I explain why your chickens could still get attacked by predators. Hope you love it! #chickenlandia #welcometochickenlandia #backyardchickens

I think the two-year-old I used in this video is possibly the cutest child I’ve ever seen. ❤️❤️❤️

I've had Chickens for 10 years and learned this from my cat. Cats, and foxes, like to jump to the top of a fence, Dogs will run up a verticle object and grasp the top edge, coons and opossums will climb the mesh. But all do so from the base of the fence looking up. I placed a 45-degree overhang mesh at the top of my fence. Imagine a "Y" with one limb broken off (you could have 45-degree angles on the inside too). When predators look up thinking to climb, from the base of the fence, they see a vertical wall at the top extending out over their heads. A 4' fence to keep my cat from straying about, and he could stand 4' tall on his hind legs. He could easily jump 4' but could never figure out how to manipulate the 45-degree vertical barrier over his head, so he never tried. I hope this helps somebody.

FYI for the viewers: What she calls "hardwire mesh" in this video is more commonly known as "hardware cloth" at places like Tractor Supply and Home Depot or Lowes (and even Amazon). They are the same thing, and will work equally well, regardless of what it's called in your locale.

Where I live, your chickens aren't safe from predators until YOU INSTALL 1/4" HARDWARE CLOTH ON ALL FOUR SIDES. Racoons and Possums, cats and others EASILY climb an 8'-10' fence. EASILY. Plus, if your entire ceiling is 1/4" mesh, NOTHING, except the tiniest of bugs, can get in to eat your chickens OR to eat their food. No Mice, No squirrels, No Birds, No Nothing. P.S. If you can't afford 1/4" mesh, use a combination of chicken wire and deer netting (bag says "wildlife netting" ("bird netting" is the exact same product, at three times the price).

My chicken runs are made from 16g weld mesh and I have just finished a new quail run from the same. It is a nightmare to work with and I’m scratched to pieces but nothing is getting in to either sets of birds 😊 so worth it in the long run. Lovely to see your new arrivals. All the best. Mags 🌺🌼🌸

Done it all. My girls are safely locked up at night and a frame with hardware cloth over the screen. The run is covered with chicken wire supported with 2x4’s. Base is also protected from digging. I have an automatic door that closes them up at dark and opens in the morning. Entry door is always locked too. Great video explaining safety.

I love how real, honest and humble you are! Your laugh is infectious! Thanks for the gift of your self and time spent teaching others the joy of chickens! You have a great talent making learning so much fun! Wish you were my neighbor so we could share chicken stories! (I don't even have my coop or chickens yet...hopefully one day)

We had chickens, on the farm, all through my childhood. The only time that we lost any was when our dog was killed in a road accident and we didn't replace him for about a month. Our chickens ran wild and spent their nights in a coop and our dog slept in the barn with the cows and pigs. There was an opening that he could get out if he wanted and nothing EVER bothered our chickens....until he was gone. When something took half the chickens one night, we had a new dog a couple of days later and the chicken poaching stopped.

That was in the fifties and sixties and keeping a dog in the barn is frowned upon today but it does save the lives of your livestock and at a minimal cost. One also has the benefit of having the companionship of a good dog. It's both a pet and a working member of the family.

IMPORTANT INFORMATION: Mice are also a very annoying predator (kind of). They can squeeze through gaps of 1/2 inch hardware cloth (hardwire mesh) so MAKE SURE to get 1/4 inch, those gaps don't allow mice to get in. Also make sure that there are absolutely no openings bigger than 1/4 inch, mice are extremely tiny and can fit through any gap more than 1/2 in.

Have you heard of Welded Wire Fencing? It comes on rolls and often used for cattle. It is cheaper than hardware cloth and, when used with chicken wire, can help secure your run for daytime use - especially for large runs. (Hardware cloth is still the best though).
Just remember to lock up the chickens up at night because that is the safest option.

Mine is safe it lives inside my house with me I know I know not normal but she's not normal .... She's trained to a box and rides in the car and goes places she goes outside only under supervision she sleeps inside my home. She follows my dog or me around everywhere . She hates being away from my dog and I if I go inside the house with the dog and I leave my chicken outside for a few minutes she freaks out or is found literally sitting and waiting for me to return .... She's not happy unless I'm with her and that's inside or outside but by her living inside my house she is staying alive longer and generally people don't keep chickens inside their homes but this chicken of mine is a special one . We have a chicken coop on our property but she won't be in there with the other chickens she is used to living in my house with her box or in her indoor coop I made her but she still likes her box better ... This chicken gets compliments I take her for car rides and it trips people out how she rides I the car so well in her box ... I honestly think she's getting separation anxiety if myself or my dog is too far away from her and by that I mean out of her view if she can't see us she's angry and throwing a temper tantrum trying to get to me or my dog ... my chicken is far from normal but I love her bunches

You have to deal with so many predators!
Here in the UK it is mostly rats and foxes, sometimes stoats and weasels but my gosh you have so many!
We use a multi attack approach- good wire, dug down.
We line edges with slabs on the outside and dig in tiles on the inside.
The roof is a combo of game netting - which in the UK is used to contain game birds in the woods until they are ready to release for shooting and mesh - finally covered with plastic on over half for shelter.
We have a fox den within 30 yrds and loads of wild foxes - but our number one defence is our kittie Sir Logan, Defender of Chickens who will chase foxes off and attack them 😆

Hi Madame President, I love your new chickens. Yay for the new coop, that looks awesome. Your comparison of raccoons to 2 year olds is spot on! Great video, good to see you.

I couldn't justify the cost of hardware cloth so I found black coated. 7 foot tall 50 foot long 2x4 square fencing. It's similar to cattle fence. I covered my entire run with it and it's been great so far. Best part is it's about 50 bucks if I remember right and it's very heavy welded wire fence. And for another 100 bucks I have a fence charger and 2 wraps of electric fence ribbon around the bottom and middle of the run. It's been working great so far

So happy I found you. I have watched like 10 videos in a row😅. Your awesome.
It looks like you have a larger different house in this video? Do you sell your eggs? I have just four chickens but we rent. ( don’t tell anyone. We are not even allowed to have chickens. My landlord thinks they are dangerous 🥴. City folk.)
Much love!!

Great job, you covered it all. For once I have nothing to add, LMAO.

FYI I covered the roof of my chicken run with netting to protect them from hawks and other flying predators. HOWEVER, that didn’t stop small birds from invading my chicken feed. This caused an infestation of scaly leg mites brought in from wild birds. I now must install a roof or small holed chicken wire on the top. The preditors can also be parasitic or even microscopic
