Old School vs Modern Psytrance Production

The inception of Psytrance culture dates back several years, marking a significant period in the evolution of musical genres. Presently, we find ourselves in an era characterized by exponential advancements in technology, a factor that profoundly influences music production. While modern technology has undoubtedly enhanced the quality of music production, it's important to acknowledge certain advantages inherent in old-school production techniques. Contemporary technology, especially in the digital realm, offers a plethora of choices. However, this abundance of options is not always beneficial. In contrast, a few years ago, producers had to contend with limited resources and fewer choices. This scarcity, I believe, necessitated a more meticulous and attentive approach to utilizing available equipment. The limited choices and equipment forced producers to be more creative and resourceful.Today's technology, with its myriad of options and visually appealing graphical user interfaces (GUIs), can sometimes lead to distractions. These distractions may cause producers to make decisions based more on visual appeal than on auditory quality. In his video, E-Clip touches upon just a fraction of the broader discussion comparing old-school and modern production techniques, providing insight into how these two eras contrast and complement each other in the realm of Psytrance music production.

This video not only shed light on the intricacies of music production but also resonated with my own journey in the psytrance world. Having been a passionate follower of psytrance since ’98, a DJ from 2000 to 2008, and someone who has organized parties, the evolution of psytrance you discuss mirrors my own experiences with the genre. Your insight into the shifts in production values over the years aligns with my observations and reasons for my changing relationship with the music.

Despite my extensive background in the psytrance scene, I’m taking my first serious steps into music production. While I’ve dabbled in production since 2000, it was only recently that I decided to dedicate myself fully to learning the craft. This makes me a beginner in the realm of production, navigating my way through the practical aspects of creating music. My theoretical knowledge, built over years of involvement in the scene, is now being challenged and expanded as I delve into the hands-on process of music creation.

Your videos have been instrumental in bridging the gap between my theoretical understanding and the practical skills I need to develop. The balance between sound engineering and creativity, a theme that runs through your content, speaks directly to my current phase of learning. As I take my ‘baby steps’ in production, your guidance on how to nurture both the technical and creative sides of music making is invaluable.

The timing of discovering your content couldn’t have been more perfect. It feels like each video answers specific questions I have at the moment, aligning with discussions I’ve had with friends and reflecting my own thoughts on music production. This serendipity has been a source of motivation and reassurance, encouraging me to pursue my passion for music production with renewed vigor.

Thank you for sharing your expertise and experiences so openly. Your authenticity and the educational value of your content have been a beacon for me as I embark on this journey into music production. I’m grateful for the knowledge you’ve imparted, which has been a crucial part of my transition from a seasoned member of the psytrance community to an aspiring music producer.

This is great news! I share your taste when it comes to the more old school style - which I mostly have found in the progressive house lately but it isn't quite the same thing. You really got something going there, was a great start of a deep and hypnotic vibe

Spot on as always, thanks for this video! Inspiration is key, I couldn't agree more with doing what you love no matter what. Love that old progressive vibe, deep and out there, with less "rules" and more heart

Awesome track. It remembers me on my first nights on the dancefloor in 2004. Just closing your eyes and dive smoothely into the music. I realy miss that sound.

11:48 I do prefer the modern version. I'd rather pick the precise definition on the high end, it sounds more complete for my taste. I wonder, what did producers use to create the kick back in the 2000s ? Thank you for this video!

this was awesome to watch, loved the insights and comparisons you shared here. Amazing how even though the new kick and bass sound more 'HQ', the older school stuff just fits better within the context of the mix. Really fascinating and I love the track too fuck yeah haha

Wow / this was really eye opening. Suddenly realised a lot of what I was making was trying to emulate modern kick/bass techniques but it wasn’t fitting the vibe of the music - this is so validating. Much love! ❤

Quite interesting seeing this video as I was certainly introduced to the more new school psy but I feel the oldschool feeling resonates with me more, the floppy but punchy kicks and the deep bass reminds me of alot of Trance my dad used to play when I was a kid, something about that deep punch with the kick without have the overpowering click thats in newer tracks.
Personally I go for alot of my kicks in between that really clicky and kind off just thumping bass with a dull click if that makes sense, they seem slightly better in some mixes in my opinion I suppose it is just preference

Beginning reminded me of Yahel. I think old school progressive trance with female vocal and a psytrance harmony would work great. Great story telling

This track is so STUNNING Bro. I remember back in the day.... Ticon's We are the Mammoth Hunters and Liquid Soul's Go Reality as the first tracks for me that sounded like this....that early 2000s sound. I remember all the Spirit Zone and Flying Rhino djs adopted this sound really quickly
