I'm afraid that people with power will make poor people certainly suffer today in order to possibly prevent the suffering of future people.
I'm also afraid that whatever they propose will make things worse in the future as well.
The history of world-scale engineering has a lot of good intentions leading to disastrous results.

I agree that future people matter, as does all life, but doesn't this create a difficult discussion about abortion? And taking such an angle would make the abortion issue even more controversial than it already is, right?
