Should teaching sight words (high frequency words) be done as part of your phonics instruction? What do these two skills have to do with each other?

In this video, we dive into these questions and more! I also share how to match your high frequency word instruction to your phonics scope and sequence, and explain how to fit both high frequency words and phonics skills into your schedule.

If I do everything you suggested and it doesn’t stick that week, (w a student w no reading diagnoses just needs more repetition in general) do I just keep reading decodables w the words for exposure and adding the words to dictation while moving forward w new words or do you suggest I stay on the same word(s) until mastery? If I cycled them we would be cycling multiple words not just one or two.

Were you taught to teach high frequency words just by having kids look at a word on a card and “memorize” it? Let me know in the comments!
