The percussion instruments that Mari is playing are called "kashakas". They are simple percussion instrument consisting of two small gourds filled with beans (essentially, two small maracas connected by a string.) One gourd is held in the hand and the other is quickly swung from side to side around the hand, creating a "clack" sound upon impact. It originated in West Africa, but has been reproduced in various countries under different names.

VERY INTERESTING FACT: The composers of this song (Sivuca and Gloria Gadelha) were living in New York at the time they made this track, during a very harsh winter in the 70's.... all that coldness made them feel very homesick, So they composed this song to bring/feel them back to the local brazilian street markets of their region ;) Furthermore: They were in NY cuz Sivuca used to work together with Mirian Makeba, one of the greatest singer ever!! So The Kiffness and Maria Merenda may not even realized, but this song had already a south african/brazilian conexion even before this ;)
