In the book, Speaking of Pianists (1957) by Abram Chasins, there's a lovely description of how Frédéric Chopin described a flexible rhythm, otherwise known as tempo rubato. I love thinking about this tip when I'm walking amongst the beautiful trees.🌳 I hope the tip is helpful for your piano practicing! 🎹

Lovely choice of background music 🥰 I am learning this nocturne, but could never hope to play it as well as Paderewski.

If I’m not mistaken, the term “tempo rubato” initially referred to a practice in which the performer would change the rhythm of the melody to create suspensions against the bass line, and this practice was used even by Chopin himself.

I am very curious to know when rubato acquired the modern meaning, because I can’t imagine the performers of the past tried to play everything in strict tempo as the music would sound inorganic and metronomic…
