RealityScan By Epic Games -- Create 3D Models Using Your Phone!

Today Epic Games have released the "first come first serve" beta of RealityScan, a photogrammetry software on your phone. It currently runs only on iOS, with Android in the works, and is built on top of the technology Epic Games acquired when they purchased Capturing Reality for their Reality Capture Software. This software basically allows you to create 3D objects by taking a series of photographs, which then can be exported in 3D to SketchFab, all currently free. There are a limit of 10,000 spots available so sign up quick.

The Game Developers Who Say Ni want you to scan a shrubbery.

3:59 Just make a 1 pass around object is just not enough. You need at least 3 passes, let say 1 from up hight (pointing downwards), 1 from middle (pointing forwards) and 1 from low (pointing upwards). That is why you didn't get a good results, not enough data (images).

I am working in library and i am working on my own projects which is all about photogrammetry. I use photogrammetry to "capture and make" 3d models of old books and codexes. For 1 book, i make from 70 - 100 images with DLSR camera (for photogrammetry i am using 3D Zephyr, Instant Meshes and Blender for end high and low poly models). This dinky Apple camera can't do much for you but might be good to make basic reference models for the games.

Photogrammetry is really hard to pull off unfortunately and it's mostly due to the challenges associated with baked-in shadows. I've seen pro setups use thin drapes to dim the direct sunlight and mirrors around the subject(s) to bounce photons around more...

Indoor you want to maximize surrounding light sources because raw lighting hardly ever works, those selfie light rings you can buy cheap should do the trick.

Other than a disco ball or a mirror, a shrub is pretty much the most challenging thing you could have chosen to scan.

I wonder how well this could work with something like a polymer clay mini figure... Basically I wonder if making a figurine out of clay and scanning it could be a substitution for modelling in 3D from start.

Photogrammetry is not really useful for the use case you showed in this video. Foliage is too thin and has too much going on with various amounts of occlusion and self shadowing that is going to make it almost impossible to construct a proper model from.

It's ok for reference in a 3D modeling tool. Are you covering "The state of unreal live stream" tomorrow?, The people I follow like Game Dev TV and Druid Mechanic are getting pretty excited about it. Maybe we will get a UE5 release date .

This whole thing was quite interesting to watch.

101 in photogrammetry reflective surfaces, dont really work

I don't know if it's really interesting. You can't scan things out of a good network, which means no forest, ruins, etc...

How do I join the beta program? It only wants me to install testflight...

Any idea when they plan to release this for Android?

why iOS though 🤦 shouldn't the OS with >70% market share get targeted first?

Compared to the built-in macOS photogrammetry tools that I have heard around, would this be better than that one? There are quite the impressive results with the macOS ones, people capturing their houses with drones and all but I wonder if serious steadiness, light/shadows balance, etc also makes or breaks the outcome.

I'll do as usual and wait and see if the promised android port materializes. On a device I have access to.

Other than that hurdle, it does look neat and nifty.

It's driving me mad, that android doesn't have a lidar system to assist in these things.

The technology will take a long time to master

The thing about Photogrametry is it's not magic. If you don't put your camera on the parts you want to model at least 3-4 times, you won't get what you want. It's not intuitive, you have to go slow and really picture hitting every leaf 3-4 times.

Foliage disagrees with you just as much as you disagree with foliage.... 🤣🤣🤣
