Back in April of this year, Google announced a new feature for Android that would automatically archive rarely used applications or games for those people who were running out of storage.

When this was initially implemented, the feature was automatically triggered when you tried to install something from the Google Play Store but didn't actually have the space for it.

Users would see a pop-up like this so the device could ask if the user actually wanted to enable feature or not.

Until now, we didn't have a toggle to enable or disable the feature. We were only able to enable it or ignore it when the prompt appeared.

But Google has now begun rolling out a toggle for this feature that can be found within the Settings of the Play Store.
We can find this by first opening up Google Play.
Tapping on your profile image in the top right corner.
And then selecting Settings from the drop-down list.

From here, we want to expand the General category and then scroll down a bit.
When the feature has been rolled out to your device, you will see a new toggle down here labeled Automatically Archive Apps.

This should be disabled by default, but we can easily enable it with a single tap.
I assume the prompt will continue to appear for those who run out of storage but are trying to install something.
So there should still be two ways to enable this feature.

If you're curious about how this works, tap on the Learn More link here and you'll be taken to a Google Support page for the feature.

It's important to know that when it kicks in and apps or games are archived, only the app data itself is removed from the smartphone or tablet. Your personal data attached to the app will remain in place.

So if you have passwords saved in an app that gets removed. . .or if you have entered or synced some other type of data to it.
Then that data will stay on your device just in case you decide to reinstall the application at a later date.

If you see that something has been archived and you have no need to use it ever again.
It's best to fully uninstall the application or game so that you can recover all fo the data that it was using.

If you don't fully remove it then you'll keep bits of unneeded data on your phone or tablet.

To find out if your Android device has archived an application or game before, we need to open up the Google Play Store.
Tap the profile icon in the top right corner.
Choose the Manage Apps & Device option.
Tap Manage from the tab up here at the top.
And then scroll through these chip filters up here until you see the Archive label.

Tapping on it will show you all of the applications or games that have been archived for you.

As with all new feature for Android, I appreciate it when Google or whatever OEM has added a way for the user to enable or disable it.

I know this will be useful for a large number of people but it's not something that I see myself personally using. And Android is at its best when they give the user the choice to use a new feature or simply ignore it.

Is there any way you can help me? I was using archived apps on my motorola but when I changed my phone I could no longer access this function, it appears but does not change or archive. Can you give me a link to a copy of an apk you've already archived? I'm going to call some programmers I know to make a tool like this, I'm even going to try to find influencers from this area. If you can leave a link to your apk I'd be grateful ♥️
