Samuel C.C. Ting is the Thomas Dudley Cabot professor of physics at MIT. An MIT faculty member since 1969, he is also the principal investigator for the Alpha Magnetic Spectrometer project, a particle physics experiment module that was installed on the International Space Station in early 2011. In 1974, while leading a research team at the Brookhaven National Laboratory, Professor Ting discovered the J Particle (a new kind of heavy elementary particle), work that led to the 1976 Nobel Prize in physics (shared with Burton Richter). Professor Ting holds two degrees from the University of Michigan: a BA in mathematics and physics and a PhD in physics.

While he's not shy about discussing his achievements and his considerable intelligence, he is nevertheless quite humble and unpretentious. Not boastful at all.

Favorite line from the interview: "The experiment was originally designed with a super conducting magnet. Very difficult to build. So we built it." Just like that.

"I was there six years, missed quite a few classes, never missed a football. I'm very proud of this fact" 😂😂😂 Love him.

I love this man. “Well math and physics were easy for me. I get a good grade and go to football games.”😭😭

I find it wonderful that in the comments there are people who liked the interview and are interested in the life of this good man, while I listen to it every night just to fall asleep.

I watched this video many times while falling asleep, learned a lot about Samuel Ting and his work. Last night dreamed that I was working for him and he was very strict research lead :D

Am I the only one who's watched this hundreds of times whilst falling asleep?

I am happy to see this interview, which to me is like catching up on the life of someone I haven't seen in 40some years, after being around them often. I'm not surprised his kids didn't seen him much. He flew back and forth from MIT to CERN, to be able to teach freshman physics to a small lecture hall full of sophomores who, ahem, you could say were a semester behind for a variety of reasons. I remember us giving him a standing ovation when he won the Nobel, and someone in the class said something like "Congratulations on winning the Nobel Prize." The three other things I remember from it were that he was a nice and humble guy; that he spent one entire lecture teaching us Einstein's Special Relativity (plus some General Relativity beyond that) which was not part of the course; and that I got an A. Which was a far cry from how I did when I earlier took the class with a professor who won the "Institute Screw" award for flunking 40% of our entire class year, in a mandatory freshman course.

The best part is how they deleted the subtitles, so they expect you to actually watch all of it and listen to it.

I'm very impressed with how a man with such a high level of intelligence, also displays an equivalent level of grace and respect for others. What a memory!!

This man is a universal treasure and a cheerful reminder of what humans can achieve when they set politics aside and pursue their purpose and passion.

If the interviewer had 10 questions, maybe 1 of those questions got asked in it’s entirety.

I gotta get better control this. Whenever I’m about to go to bed I find something like this and it keeps me up way too late but I never watch it in my other normal time free time.

Am I right?
