As a bartender and server in the USA I was taught that an empty plate is like trash just sitting in front of that customer ask if you can remove it to keep the table clean and orderly looking.

Most servers will ask if they can take your plate before taking it. They may also ask if you're done.

It's just cultural differences. When you are in another country, adapt to where you are.

And what is protocol for the queen? When she's finished so are you. Finish your jellied eels.

Yeah, agree to disagree on this one. I'm fine with not staring at a dirty plate for the rest of my time at the restaurant.

I don't see how this is viewed as rude. It's just clutter left to sit there for no reason. Yes, take my plate please so I can pull my drink closer or rest my hands on the table w/o grazing my plate w/sauce or grease on the edge. If one person is still eating, they're still eating whether the other plates are there or not. It's not like those sitting at the table notice it less b/c of all the dirty plates hanging about. There's nothing wrong being the only person still eating.

That’s good service they ask you if you are through. Then you have desert or drinks. You are just used to crappy service. Plus your snobs. My mother waited Tables for 30 years. If you don’t give good service you don’t get the good tips. People would wait to sit at her tables.

Don’t understand. I love when the waitress proactively asks what they can clear out of the way.

American standard cafe clearing differs from European, where you wait for the table to finish. I spent 30 years in the restaurant industry. If I was serving Europeans, I would clear appropriately.

How slow do you eat ? I push my plate to the end of the table as soon as I'm done. ( I usually sit on the end ) hate looking at my plate just sitting there . Maybe that's just a European thing, which is fine, Different Strokes for different folks.

It is NOT RUDE to take away someone's place if they are done. No one wants a place sitting in front of them.

You can just tell them don't take the plate

I personally don't find it rude. Why should you have a plate that is dirty, that they can clean for the next customer so they don't run out. Yes I am sure they have thousands of plates. But while one set of customers are eating then they are cleaning the rest so they are available for the next group. It is one thing if they take the plate as you are still eating. But I personally don;t find it rude, and as long as they don't kick me out of my table or take my beverage then I am cool. Now yes I will admit maybe they should ask you first, but as long as they ask first then it is not rude. Also you are the only one eating even if his plate is still there.

You are supposed to stick your fork in the hand of the waiter when they do that.

I wonder if it's because we use to-go leftover boxes so much, and Brits don't? I'm usually the last one done, and if everyone else seems done, I'll get a box.
Also, I personally don't like dirty plates on the table haha.

I like mine to be taken away. Places like IHOP have so many plates, bowls of creamer and syrup and all kinds of stuff on the table. Please get some of these empty plates out of my way. I feel so crowed. I do however hate when they top off my coffee when I just got it fixed how I want it. I only drink one cup per day, don't ruin it. Lol

I need my plate roved because my OCD with a crowded table drives me crazy

Have you ever heard the phrase “When in Rome”? It’s not rude here, in fact it’s just proper service. Maybe you should adapt. You sound like the Brits on holiday in Greece who complain that there’s too many Greeks.

Kinda hard to enjoy a night out if that means being surrounded by dirty dishes.

WTH, who likes sitting next to an empty dirty plate in front of them. 99.9% of the time the server will ask if they can take the plate. NO ONE GRABS AN EMPTY PLATE GET OVER IT. Your judgment is rude!
