This man has literally said that what his son was doing with his life was jack sh1t, compared to what the members of the JL were doing with theirs. It's only after Victor becomes Cyborg, loses any chance of the life he chose for himself, and starts working along side the JL as a result, is when his father is finally proud of him.

Screw that man's pride. If I were Cyborg, I'd tell him you're not my father, your son died in that explosion.
