I just had this done 5 minutes ago, the guys just drove off. I believe this will make it safer for me to sit on my front porch while I smoke my cigarettes

Radon gas is most certainly a real thing. With that said, it's actually an inert gas, much like the common noble gases that your used to hearing about. In order for Radon to really do damage it has to attach itself to some kind of dust particle, which is then taken into the lower lung. We're talking particle size of less than 5 micron. Radon has a primary decay method of Alpha and will do internal damage, with that said, if you just breathe it in and right back out the damage from decay will be very minimal. Radon is a decay product that's primarily produced in the U-238 decay series. I say this because of the uranium that exist in nature about 99.3% of it is U-238. Radon-222 exist about (6) daughters into the decay series of U-238. One of the other benefits of Radon is the fact that it has a relatively short half life, about 4 days. So the effective half life of Radon within your body is relatively low because the contribution from physical half life is so high. There's another radioactive gas that we call Thoron gas and it is a decay product of Thorium-232. It's called Thoron gas just because it's a decay product of Thorium, however, it's really just another form of Radon, Radon-220. With Radon-220 your looking at a half life of about a minute. The progeny of these gases will persist in particle form with charge and when they attach to dust particles they can reach the lower portions of lung, where they can then be incorporated into the body through blood and gastrointestinal paths. It's estimated that a standard person in the United States gets about 620mrem/year and about 55% of that is from Radon exposure. This may sound bad but there are studies out there that show some populations of people, for example people in India, recieve doses that are often 3-5 times that amount. They have been unable to observe any significant impact on the health of those who are exposed to dose ranges far beyond that which we see in the United States. In fact, most of the areas where studies have been done the populations have life expectancies that are almost identical to the United States. I actually work as a Radiation Protection Specialist for the Department Of Energy. I'm not here to tell you that Radon doesn't contribute to dose, because it does, but is there data out there that seems to suggest the overall impact of Radon on lifespan is underwhelming, Yes!!

I'm most glad to see someone use proper dust extraction tbh

In Massachusetts it is now code to install radon piping underneath concrete slabs . Then in the event a radon test is performed and radon is present, all they need to do is attach the fan system to pull the radon gas out .

Installed 3-4 of these systems a day for 4 years. Get yourself a pry bar and 5 gallon bucks. For homes with no gravel underneath dig out as wide as possible around the house and a decent depth. Expect to try to get 3 full buckets. It will save you from having to add extra extraction points and not choke off your fan, causing the motor to burn up premature. I would try to do the same on gravel foundation homes as well, although depending on the size of the gravel, you can get away with digging less.

How exactly are you getting radon in your home, I've never even heard of someone needing this, can someone explain?

Just fyi a that huge pry bar at harbor freight that you said you would never have a use for even tho it was only 10 dollars this exactly is what it’s good for for the longest time same here flat head and hammer but huge pry bar definitely faster easier and safer thank me later

The algorithm has been really pushing radon related videos to me. Until this week, I didn't even know radon build-up was a thing.

I mean, when I worked as a machinist, I used to seal my cuts with superglue so I don't see a problem with electric tape! :D Great job, by the way! Interesting!

You edited out the cursing after you smacked your thumb. That's the best part.

Is this a better way of going vs. the system attaching to the sump pump? Does it damage the foundation at all?

Is there an idea place to put the hole in the foundation?
