Показать описание
Dr. Choi is a world-class neurologist and a Professor of Neurology at Stony Brook School of Medicine in New York, U.S.A. He is also the head of the KIST Brain Science Institute, which has contributed to the advances in brain science research by developing the method for diagnosis of early-onset Alzheimer's disease.
Dr. Choi, who was nominated for the Nobel Prize in Medicine for providing evidence that glutamate is the cause of stroke, shared his insight on the causes of stroke and the treatment methods available. He stated that stroke is the third and second leading causes of death in the West and the East, respectively. He added, on a more positive note, that the primary risk factors such as hypertension, cigarette smoking and obesity have been discovered, and shared that there has been a development of new drugs such as clot busters that produce immediate effects in stroke patients.
As the Director-General of the KIST Brain Science Institute, he shared his knowledge in the field of brain science. He stressed that the ultimate objective of brain science research was to facilitate our understanding of our own kind, and that it does not entirely center on the prevention and treatment of brain diseases, even though it is a highly important area of this discipline. He also expressed that his topic of interest is currently "linking brain science with the computer or robotics industry." In regard to the advances of brain science research, he revealed that Korea, with exceptional technological prowess, is making considerable investments into the related industries.
Dr. Dennis W. Choi also shared more personal stories including how he was as a student and his father, Dr. Choi Young-hwa, who had a strong influence on the establishment of KIST.
