Merle always had Western Swing and Jazz flourishes in his style of Western Country. They tried to associate him with the Outlaw movement, which wasn't exactly right. He Did inspire the movement, just by being a former Felon and recording out West, and generally doing things his way, not the Nashville way, He put out My Own Kind of Hat as a kind of response to being painted as Outlaw, meaning I just do things my way, RIP Merle, my favorite Country singer and a songwriter up there with Gershwin, Dylan, and Willie.
