Potassium test is also called serum potassium test or K+ test. It measures the level of potassium in serum, a fluid found in the blood. This test is done as a general metabolic test. Most of the potassium, about 90%, is found in cells, but some amount of it is also found in the blood. Potassium is found in many dietary sources such as milk, fish, vegetables, pulses, fruits, nuts and seeds.

This mineral helps perform many important functions in our body, such as:

entry of nutrients into cells
remove waste products from cells
connection between nerves and muscles
maintaining balance in body fluids
control the functioning of the heart
maintain in place
Aldosterone hormone controls the level of potassium in the body. Potassium tests are done to check for medical conditions, because changes in normal potassium levels may indicate other problems.
This test is done to diagnose and monitor kidney disease, which is a common condition that causes abnormal potassium levels. Getting a potassium test done is also recommended for those people who show symptoms of hypokalemia (potassium deficiency) or hyperkalemia (excess potassium).

Common symptoms of hypokalemia are:

muscle cramps and weakness
Dizziness
Constipation
irregular heartbeat

Symptoms associated with hyperkalemia are:

Tiredness
nausea
irregular heartbeat
tingling or numbness
paralysis or weakness

It is also recommended for people who have metabolic acidosis, caused by uncontrolled diabetes and excessive vomiting.

Sometimes patients suffering from paralysis may also be advised to get potassium test done.
