How do you know these things are seated? do you just slide them all the way down by hand of you have to hammer them with the socket until they done move down anymore?

Hey, was just wondering, i have an e90 320i 2006 and its buring a lot of oil, no mechanic wants to do it and they ask for 1k for valve stem seals, was wondering can i do this job myself, where can i find the tools and how to? Thanks in advance!
