This is a wonderful native shrub that offers so much to wildlife and humans and does fabulously well in the shade. Plant as many as you can if you are in the native range. We know you will love this gem.

Lindera benzoin is the scientific name and it's in the Lauraceae family.

Nice information; thanks for sharing. My wife and I live in a simi-wooded area behind a creek, and we have several of these bushes. For a while I was calling them Carolina Buckthorns. Boy, was I mistaking on that one. We have a very cool bird that drops down from time-to-time to eat the berries of the Spicebush. It is the Pileated Woodpecker, and they are fun not only to watch but listen to as well.

I planted two bare root Spicebush plants this past winter. I used Steve’s video on how to successfully plant bare roots. I did a scratch test yesterday and they are both alive! I hope I got a male and a female for the beautiful berries.

I germinated 8 of these guys from seed for the first time it’s pretty neat the leaves are starting to resemble miniature spicebush leaves.

I don’t have this beauty in my garden but I recall just recently reading somewhere that you require both a male and a female plant in order for berry production. Is this correct? I hope that I didn’t miss this mentioned in your video. Love your enthusiasm!
