The early Tintinnabuli work Fratres (1977) – Latin for Brothers – has found enduring resonance on the concert stage, as film music, or as an inspiration for dance. Originally scored as three-part music without fixed instrumentation, this versatile piece features a bass note drone throughout, which quietly sets the stage for the percussive elements and the harmonic sequence. The melody follows a mathematical formula, which might not be apparent at first, but has piqued the interest of many a listener.
