Bench Grafting fruit trees

Early spring grafting of pear trees. We show both chip budding and whip and tongue grafting of pear in this video. Dormant scionwood is used and rubber bands with parafilm are wrapped over the wound.

Grafting is an age old technique which ensures desired fruit quality and early production.

I had lots of issues with rotting roots when I grafted my apples to bare root first year m111. All the rain here one week in may did them in. I let a few rootstock grow out and establish and I think/hope that might help this year, so far they look good. T-Budding apple and peaches in fall was more successful for me. Also we planted 15 seedling trees last fall, hope to fill out our orchard with 20 more this year. The most successful is the crabapple tree in my dads yard, those have been taking and grow like mad. On that one tree I have Oxford black, pink lady, wickson, green Kerr, ice princess, black strawberry, bite me, pilot, and some others even. Pretty cool to have all that on a tree that can fit in a living room.

Keep the homestead content comin, glad to see it. Thanks for all your help and God bless.

I've been interested in grafting, crossbreeding and other horticultural stuff since I was a little kid. I remember my grandma clipped an article for me talking about grafting potato and tomato plants where both the roots and fruits would be edible - and that was what started it for me. I never succeeded in doing that and I don't know if it's even possible but I've been interested in horticulture ever since. I haven't felt like doing my hobbies in years but I remember always trying to start clones from cuttings, grafting trees together, cross-pollinating plants, trying to build little greenhouse grow boxes, etc. I never had much success but I spent a lot of time playing around with this stuff. Probably my most successful endeavor (which isn't much) was growing apple trees from seeds out of an apple. I planted them probably 10 years ago and they had some apples on them one year but I got a little overzealous on the pruning and I haven't seen anymore apples in the last few years.

That's some world class tree-mating sir. Imagine a gooseberry bush getting its way with an Oak tree? Perfection.

The video and audio recording, as well as the editing, of this short clip are as sharp as that grafting knife! Beautiful to watch and very educational. Well done.

I did this as a summer job long ago and your technique looks great. We did it out in the field, with slightly more mature trees. There must have been thousands of trees we did so the bare root bench approach didn’t work for us. Your orchard is impressive!

Very nice. We had a discussion over on Instagram a while back and I took your recommendation on the root pouches. I have 30 benchgrafted apples in them in the greenhouse right now. So far so good. Thanks and glad things are going well your way...
