Outdoor Vitals Fortius 2P Tent - First Look

What it is : This is a trekking pole tent from the company called Outdoor Vitals. This is new to the market and I have received countless requests to review it.

Thanks to all of the requests, I purchased this tent so that I can give you all an Agenda Free Review.

I’ve heard that there are some videos on this tent already but I’ve been told that they can’t be trusted.

That’s why TOGR exists; I’m going to give it to you all straight. The good, the bad, and I’ll show where a product excels and where it falls behind.

Does this tent look familiar in terms of design?

I would say yes! What do you say?

Versions : This is a Fortius 1p and 2P tent

Colors : Arctic which appears to have a green hue to it and Blue

Materials : Floor & fly - 15 D sil / PU micro-ripstop nylon, 1,500 mm HH

Mesh - 10D no-see-um nylon mesh

Zippers : YKK

Weight : 2lbs 2.5oz

Measurements Compressed : 5.5” x 7”
Measurements Setup : Measure in Video

Cost : $340

….
Features :
Taped seams
2 doors
2 person
2 interior hanging loops
Lots of guy lines

Thoughts :
Overall this looks to be a very nice tent -
Setup is fairly straight forward - if you have ever setup a trekking pole tent before, you’ll make easy work of it.
Quality looks to be very good but not great - I did find a few loose threads which is slightly disappointing especially when some very inexpensive tents have exceptional fit and finish. This is a pricey tent
Materials - with this being a 15D sil PU Nylon, I am concerned about stretching especially when it's out in the rain. It will stretch, it will sag but the question is, how bad will it be? The materials for this tent are higher end and they should be for the price

Weight : The weight for this tent is very good but something that you have to remember is that trekking poles are required for the setup - if you carry trekking poles with you when you are out backpacking, you’ll appreciate the lower weight but if you don’t carry trekking poles then the weight of this tent isn’t all that impressive.
Looks - This is an awesome looking tent - I love the blue color with the yellow accents.

Summary :
This tent looks to be a fairly close copy of the Zpacks Duplex tent - the duplex is an amazing shelter using some of the most advanced materials in the world, it’s insanely lightweight (around 1lb) and is also insanely expensive…not everyone needs or wants to spend that sort of money on a tent.

That alone makes this a very interesting tent.

I like what I see here but I would say hold off on purchasing this tent for now, at least wait for me to rain test this tent. I think it will be waterproof but I’m concerned about the stretching that is going to happen with this material. It will stretch, it will sag but how much? We will find out very soon.

Coming up I’m going to perform a rain test with this tent and I will do my best to get that up next week; rain is forecasted so make sure to subscribe

I've put 18 nights into my Fortius 2P from snow to summer. Solid tent, performs exactly as expected.

I have this tent, and the 1p version. I Took it out in rain and hail with my daughter and dog, we fit well kept dry and had a great time. Minimal condensation. I trust it and love how compact it packs in my bag. I'll be taking it across some colorado peaks In The near future. Look forward to hearing your follow-up as you get to use it.

I think it looks like a pretty decent tent. I'd like to see what it's like guyed out to see how much that helps the sagging issue 😊

Good test. I like Outdoor Vitals. The title was very unfairly misleading, suggesting that the tent is crap. Bad choice of wording.

Been watching this channel for awhile. Love the content and integrity presentation. First time I’ve seen Luke deal with a company unfairly.

Like all of the other comments, the tent appears to have performed as it should have, in the way it was set up and in the weather conditions it was in. Nylon sags when it gets wet. It’s a single wall tent with only two mesh walls. It appears it is summer time storms in the video so you will have humidity and condensation.

From the title, I thought this tent would be awful. What’s up? Good quality, although saggy. Condensation to be expected. I don’t get it.

The guy lines are there for a reason. Use them to prevent the sagging. Choosing not to use the guy lines is a failure on the part of the person setting up the tent. The material is know to stretch / sag. The manufacturers design accounted for the stretch. The condensation may have been less if the tent was set up properly.

The saging is because you have not pegged the tent out fully so I feel you can not take that in to consideration apart from your lack of pegging out it properly Luke I feel its a good tent as for stretch in fabric thing easily salted buy tighting a line around top of both trekking poles and pegging out it will stay tight then

Yeah, to be a complete review, the tent needs to be fully set up with all guy lines staked out.I still find most of their products prohibitively expensive for the actual amount of time I would use them but have bought a few items that can more than handle the use I put them through.

"Let's test this car real quick. While it does come with wheels, I'll go ahead and test it without them... Wow! Worse than I expected!"

Those lines hanging are for pegs in the ground. What you did here is grab the hammer by the head and hammer the nail in with the wooden handle then say "wow this hammer is not performing as expected"

I used the 1p Fortius on the Pacific Crest Trail for 165 days in 2023. I am still using it into June 2024. It is a solid tent.

At my price (Kickstart), I’m in love. Thank you Outdoor Vitals. And thank you Luke for giving me a thumbs up!

I normally agree with how your information is packaged Luke, but the title of this one seems a bit unfair. It's a well made product to serve a niche group of hikers at a fair price point. The design has some cons that aren't really flaws because it stayed dry on the interior.

I think the sagging is caused by improper tensioning of the tent, it also comes with guylines which should almost always be used to help with weather loads and interior space. Eith all single wall tebt condensation can be an issue, but if you leave more of a gap under the rainfly portion it can ge reduced.

Since the ridgeline is the main area of sagging, I would have thought tightening the ridgeline guyouts at the trekking poles would make it more taut. The side panel attachments are for wind loads from the side, not the ridgeline.

How can you call it a test when you didint set the tent up correctly?

The Fortius is just like any other tent made with sil/PU micro-ripstop nylon, it will stretch.
The trade off of owning a tent made with this material is that you must readjust the tension of the guy lines to compensate for the stretching of the material.
I would rather own this tent than a double wall tent that requires poles simply because I want to be as light as possible.
A trade off besides the stretching is interior condensation.
I use a ZPacks Duplex that has the same condensation issues that the Fortius has.
Overall Outdoor Vitals has a solid offering here.
The question is does one want to manage the known issues with a trekking pole tent made of this material in order to save weight or go with a double wall tent that is notably heavier.
I went with the third option of a
“” buy once, cry once “” tent made with DCF.

All single skin tents will suffer from condensation, that’s the compromise you get for the weight saving of not having an inner, also the material does absorb water and the guy lines should be re tightened, the tent should have been fully guyed out for the test, as it’s essential for a tent of this kind.
