Is it true you have to move the hives apart by a couple miles to ensure the split works?

How can you tell you have queen eggs in your brood box? How often can you split a hive? I just got my first 3 packages started

You cant split hives like that unless you found queen first, or she has been on a excluder. Thats not the ideal way to do a
