#Anesthesia and #egg #allergy ? #surgery

I am allergic to propofol (rash, swelling and severe itching), but have zero problems with egg yolks. I also have developed a similar reaction to contrast dye more recently. Every time I had to have anesthesia I had to cut my nails down prior to sedation, because coming out of it was NOT pleasant and I would cut myself with my nails I scratched so bad. I was finally able to narrow down to the Propofol during my first colonoscopy because that was the only medication the anesthesiologist gave me. Prior to sedation I told him of my prior allergic reactions to anesthesia and he said for me not to worry about it because he had never seen that reaction before with Propofol. After I was given IV Benadryl he came into the bay, sat down with me and told me that he had added that allergy to my chart, and that he was sorry he given me the wrong reassurance in my case. He said "I have never seen this reaction before, but I am glad you now have it narrowed down to the right medication and will never have to experience this again." He also told me any further colonoscopies I would have to have in the main hospital and not in the clinic. The anesthesiologist at the hospital suspected maybe a protein in that medication composition.

What do you give if you can't give propofol?

I’m allergic to propofol. Drs didn’t believe me because I told them I was allergic to eggs well they found out real quick I was right. So if they don’t believe you maybe check their credentials. Needless to say the dr no longer has his license to practice. I thank God every day I wake up.

Well, this makes sense why my son had a reaction after his ear tube surgery. His ENT and allergist were at the same office and no one knew that?! I’ve since switch to a different allergist who specializes in food allergies but now I’m thinking I need to find a new ENT as well.

This is exactly what happened to me. It was in my chart and I had a bracelet on, but was given profofol. I became bradycardia moved to icu and now want to have the elective surgery but am afraid too. Does all anesthesia contain egg products?

I have reaction to contrast die. Its fun waking from surgery with hives and itching

as far as I know I am only allergic to pineapple but I was allergic to the anesthesia mix they gave me that have propofol, fetanyl, morphine . they were unable to tell which I was allergic to so i asked them to just give me a list of everyhting they gave me. I had urticaria mid way in the surgery .

Oh my goodness. Whay happens if soneone os alergic? How so they do the surgery?

I have a SOY allergy. How does this affect anesthesia?
I can have a bad post nasal drip to a full blown asthma attack from soy products.

But propofol only contains egg lecithin? Egg lecithin, and egg lecithin is highly processed to remove the egg protein, which is what allergy sufferers have the reaction to… so can someone explain how an egg allergy sufferer can be allergic to propofol even though it doesn’t contain egg protein? There’s been new evidence saying it’s completely safe for egg allergy sufferers… ?

I think allergies are pretty stupid you don’t know if you’re severely allergic to something until you’re about to die from it ;-;

Why would someone with egg yolk allergy be able to eat baked goods with eggs in it but not like scrambled eggs for example?
