How To Fire-Test Aircrete | Unforming Rocket Stove FAIL

My half inch slabs of aircrete proved to be too thin, cracking when removed from the forms. The double-thick (1-inch) floor piece was much more durable. I put it to a fire-test on the top of my firebrick rocket stove. The heat differential between the side of the aircrete directly touched by flames and the opposite side were significant...proving the highly insulative properties of the aircrete.

I love how you share the pain and take it on the chin but you never give up. Good luck with Aircrete Mk2! Take care, Poo

Thank you for another great video. Good information and I learned a good bit. For the boards with cuts in it maybe use a thin layer of wax or wax paper to seal and release. Thank you again! edit to add: It looks like your mixture of foam to cement was good the thicker piece held up it should be stronger the thicker you make it.

I used mesh drywall tape with excellent results for a similar project. Not sure if high temps may affect the mesh tape. Good work!

Sorry your aircrete was so brittle. Perhaps while you are using dimensional lumber forms you can line your forms with garbage bags, slit fence or thin plastic bags to act as a release agent and to keep moisture from leeching into the forms. One of the suggestions from last episode was to fold the concrete slurry into the foam to maintain the foam structures. Can you use your thinner panels of aircrete as a lining material for the ceramic flue pipe. The ~300°F temperature difference from your test was impressive. Kudos for the new bellows. Save your lungs. Stay safe out there as the pandemic continues to evolve and suggest additional closures. Wishing you and your family continued Peace, health and happiness. JW

I would look into chopped fiberglass fibers, its used a lot to strengthen concrete and a couple of wire stiffeners in smaller parts

need some type of reinforcing in the concrete try some wire mesh .

Hey man, where did you take the words you say at the beginning of the video?

Do you think cement board might work instead of making aircrete? I don't know if that defeats the purpose or if cement board would even work.

Yes. It looks like thickness is a factor. And coat hanger should work on the armature.

Maybe make LEGO like bricks that interlock
