I can't second enough the idea of keeping a notebook. In my most recent oral interview I brought along a a small pocket sized notebook and a pen and politely requested permission to take notes. The board was impressed by this and I was told after the fact they don't often see candidates that think to do this. This served a dual purpose. Nothing screams "good candidate" like one that has done their homework. I compiled a list of department specific and city (it was a city PD that I applied to) relevant questions and information. When asked if I had any questions for the board, I didn't have to look far. Think demographics of your city, most common law enforcement interactions in the area, population numbers, number of sworn officers in the department, this will state your drive is strong enough that you took personal time to learn about the department and the city you'll be operating in, and that you're interested enough to put together good questions for learning more. This will really make you stand out!

Man, I really wanted to take a notebook and pen to takes notes during my oral board. I thought it would be a stupid idea at the very end, but I’m glad you believe it’s a great idea. I disliked multi questions in my oral boards. They stumped me every single time. I will take one for my next orals. Hope it’s allowed. 🤠

Nothing would make me smile more than causing a defense attorney (especially specializing in DUI) a huge amount of grief, especially using their methods against them. 😈I enjoyed your story Greg. 🤣

Can you answer "Why should we hire you over other applicants?"

23 tries and counting ! Meant with the chief and still no job! Last three tries, someone already road certified jump over me, son from sheriff, and someone not even qualified jumps over me! Favoritism

I had my very first oral board interview it was a group interview. There are 5 possible candidates would come in at a time and sit, in this case in front of 6 board members. Could I please get some advice of how to handle or better prepare for group interviews. I feel like I froze at times because I tried not to repeat what the previous candidates said. Everything I envisioned saying flew out the window or it seemed like to me because it was hard not to pay attention to others also I did not expect each question to be timed to one minute and we were not able to ask to repeat the question, so we really had to listen, I did my best and I was myself. Grateful for the experience.

New subscriber here. I am looking into becoming a law Enforcement officer, i have tried with my local agency twice. they handle the process very differently. I always get to pass the written test, and PAT. 3rd step is to take the oral board. During the oral board. There are questions that dont apply to my work experience and seems to be the downfall of my selection. also the scenario questions where involving DUI and domestic violence. What would you recommend? keep trying now that i know what kind of interview they do, or move out to a different agency?
