Safety Barriers, Save Lives

Some of Victoria’s most high risk regional roads are being upgraded as part of Towards Zero.

Towards Zero is a plan to ensure no one is killed or seriously injured on our roads.

You are five times more likely to be killed or seriously injured in a crash on a regional road compared to on a road in metropolitan areas. The majority of these crashes are head on collisions or happen when a vehicle runs off the road and into a roadside object, like a tree.

Flexible safety barriers, like the barrier featured in this video, are being installed on some of Victoria’s most dangerous roads because they reduce these types of crashes from happening by more than 85%.

I  think governments in Australia are preparing for civil unrest resulting from climatic changes-not the CO2 rubbish but a new mini, or not so mini, ice age.They're supposed to save lives-possibly they do result in a net reduction in deaths and injuries. I haven't really looked into it, but one should never forget that if money is spent on one safety initiative, that money isn't being spent on other safety initiatives that may save more lives.Let's imagine a scenario of skyrocketing food and energy prices where the gov't feels the need to control people's movements.If you've got kilometre after kilometre of safety barriers, you're more than halfway to having a decent "wall'. Put a line of barbed wire between the ground and the bottom of the barrier, 2 or 3 along the top, and violas!Put some guards with rifles on patrol and a chopper or two, and you've got your very own Trojan horse people-stopper.
