Finding amazing Big Wig’ 18th Century Art at Newark Antiques Fair!
I’ve just visited Newark Antiques Fair in Nottinghamshire, England and I’m going to show you an incredible Georgian painting (about 250 years old) of a gentleman wearing a big wig…he’s a ‘Big Wig’!

You’ve heard the saying ‘Big Wig’ before I’m sure. It describes a man of high status, wealth and position. I’ll tell you why this is the case by showing you this particularly interesting painting. How much do you think it’s worth…£400 or £40,000?

Fine portrait! Interesting cleaning tip on using a wet wipe! I often wonder why people purchase portraits of unknown people—
My grandmother and grandfather had their oil portraits done in the 1930s by an artist (George C?) Hall); he was a family friend who studied under Canada’s Group of Seven. They were substantial pieces. The portraits were stolen, and I often wonder where they ended up—hopefully not the rubbish heap. They were extremely well done. I am on a constant quest to “find” Nana and Grunka. Thank you David for this informative episode! Brought back memories.

You can buy some decent paintings from charity shops David as i got 4 paintings . The one that really puzzles me i got a painting of a Glasgow pub painted in 94 . Signed by Parry but can't work out if it is E Parry or something like a E in Chinese lol .

What's a big wig portrait worth? Depends on who's under the wig! Unknown bigwhig dude? 400 quid apparently. Famous name/face? Get your wallet ready! We still refer to old photos and paintings as "instant ancestors". In the USA, dealers say cute kids and pretty women sell for the most money. Older gents, or powdered hair guys, go for a lot less. Here, a cute kid by an itinerant "folk artist" - someone semi-trained who made a living going around painting portraits - still sells for a serious whack.
