It all began over 100 years ago ― when traveling overseas was even more difficult than it is today ― as railway tracks were first laid in Fukui, facilitating the circulation of people and goods around Japan and prompting the development of international trade.

Railways greatly contributed to the development of modern Japan and Fukui ― which connected Tokyo to Western Europe through the Euro-Asian International Railroad passing through the port of Tsuruga ― is the perfect place to get a feeling of that legacy.

Get ready for a trip back in time to the Meiji era of 1868-1912, when the Japan we know and love was still under construction!
