This is my current obsession. It sounds more like a cry than a song. Like he's pouring his heart out to a saxophone, and it's crying with him. Which is kind of beautiful because music does feel your pain with you. Then it gets really warm and there are so many voices fighting. But when the banjo comes in it sounds so backwoods and mystical. Like the conversation went from inside his head to the world in front of him.

Leave it to Bluecoats to show you music that touches your soul. What a beautiful piece. Every time I listen to it, I end up thinking very deeply afterwards. I'm so grateful for this song, its creators and players/singers, and of course to the drum corp that transformed it.

This song had me in tears I don't know why.

I think its kind of interesting that the visuals in the video are warped, similar to the air above a fire.

Bon Iver has the balls to experiment with music. I appreciate that.

god, i wish this song was an hour long
the banjo at the end is so out of place and hits so damn hard!
maybe it is the most complicated and mysterious song in the album, and that's saying something

Them saxophones and that sweet, sweet banjo get me every time.

To me, this is a song of letting pain wash over you. An acknowledgement of being caught/carved in fire, of recognising the hopelessness of a situation but also finding peace in that fact.

This is Justin's favorite song on the entire record. He said it was like a conversation between himself and Mike Lewis. The only way this could have been created is with two people at once, using the "Messina" machine.

I don't think there's anything Justin could make that I wouldn't love

The first time or two I listened to the album I disregarded this song. After a while though it basically reached out and grabbed my heart and stopped me in my tracks.

Beautiful, mesmerizing, painful.

I love how when the bass comes in it outlines a fourth chord in the progression that you didn't realise was there all along.

I find this song inspirational. As though it’s an ode to life’s trials, the scars, that have made us who we are today. We’ve all been carved in fire in some way, caught in the flames, and we are strong because of it.

Alternative music like this one is the music of pure freedom, its free flowing, doesn't comform to any mould of music making. It goes where it pleases, it always surprises you. People who listen to alternative music are those who understand and long for true freedom, For those who won't be boxed in.
