Rebecca Romijn was physically perfect for the role. She had the long, flowing red hair, the piercing blue eyes, and the lithe figure that are all iconic features of Mystique. She brought a lot of depth to the role. She made Mystique more than just a two-dimensional villain. She showed us that Mystique was a complex character who was motivated by her own sense of self-preservation and her desire to protect her people.

If they had just followed the comics, all they would have had to do is paint her blue and put her in a costume. But instead, , they had to put on all those little application pieces, for the same reason they dressed everyone in black leather; they were afraid it would look too "comic booky." We have since seen any number of comic-based movies where they have been more true to the original depiction of the characters, and mainstream audiences have been perfectly fine with it. It's just one of the many ways in which Hollywood takes itself far too seriously.
