How Headers Work

preview_player
Показать описание
A header is a beam installed over an opening which disperses the load above to the sides.
Without a header the weight above would eventually cause the wall to settle or sag.
The stud under the end of the header is called the jack.
The stud attached to the jack that runs from the sill plate to the top plate is called a king stud.
These short studs above the header are called cripples.
Often, on large openings such as garage doors, multiple jack and king studs are required.
For this building, any opening larger than 7 feet requires 2 jack and 2 king studs.
The plans called for the larger headers to be made out of LVL, laminated veneer lumber, which is stronger than conventional lumber.
All three plys of the LVL put together are less than the thickness of the 2x8 wall, so we hold them to the outside- that way there’s space on the inside for insulation like spray foam.
Here is an example of two openings over top of one another- A personnel door with an exhaust fan above. The header at the top takes care of the weight for both openings. @hausplans

Yea I worked with a few guys that would hide information from you because they didn't want you getting ahead of them. which is stupid tbh because the more everyone knows the better and faster we get jobs done. So content like this is very helpful please make more thank you.

This would be a 38 minute video on some channels...

This is a perfectly executed no-nonsense video. Subbed. 👍

As a 19 year carpenter, both commercial and residential, what a very well spoken explanation sir. On the commercial side of steel framing, they only use a King and Queen stud on either side of any door or window openings. They attach the steal stud header to both the King and Queen studs. Bravo sir, I tip my hat to you.

I've been a finish carpenter for 35 years, and I have to say, I would be absolutely delighted and honored to follow our work. It looks impeccable, and I think it would make my job a whole lot easier! BTW, while I know that certain sizes of headers require a specific number of jacks, , I never knew that more than one king stud was required... thank you for the lesson!

Outstanding video. I’m currently teaching myself how to remodel and rehab houses. I am not trying to be the flippers that just deal with cosmetics and leave polished turds. This video just gave me answers to questions I’ve been asking for 2 years

You provided more info in a minute than some channels do in a month. Commend you for that!

As a garage door installer, I wish more contractors knew about additional jack studs for large/garage openings. Great video

As I work with a contractor to renovate my 1940's house, we've had to fix improperly supported walls. I appreciate the simple, straight forward information. Please do more of these types of videos.
