Caged hen campaigns in Europe | Kirsty Henderson, Sean Gifford, Sophie de Jonckheere | EAG London 23

This panel discussion brings together European leaders in the animal protection movement that are actively campaigning to end the use of cages for hens. This panel will explore the question: “a watershed moment in Europe for caged hens–does our movement have the balance right between corporate campaigning and legislative advocacy?”

With the EU Commission set to propose major legislation in 2023 banning cages for hens across the EU, and various national governments (Germany, Austria, etc.) already phasing out cages, what role does corporate campaigning play in accelerating change for hens at the national and European level? Should our movement be investing more resources into corporate campaigns to make the passage of EU wide legislation more likely, or is now the time to push harder for legislative change while many European politicians appear sympathetic to our cause?
