Melee Controller Grips

hey guys! in this video Im just talking about some different controller grips Ive seen/used myself. if any of these interest you or you have any questions be sure to ask me! I'll answer any ones I can. for the claw grip I will have my own "How to Play Claw" video out shortly where I'll discuss a trick I myself used to make claw more comfortable and to learn it easier. I haven't seen too many videos on YouTube about controller grips, specifically on Melee or on the Gamecube controller so I thought it'd be interesting to make one myself. as always if theres anything for me to improve, please let me know as well as if theres a specific video you want to see that I hopefully can make. hope you enjoyed, thanks for watching!

I grip the controller upside down with the buttons facing down to the floor and with the cable wrapped around my left testicle. I also put double sided tape on the D-pad.

I use a variation of claw on the left side so I can taunt faster using my thumb

I play claw with peach for float cancel stuff. And stock with samus, but I switch to claw when attacking from the ledge. it's super useful

Stock grip Luigi. Any jump input feels super awkward with my index finger.

I wanna see someone play with their controller vertically.

This is exactly the grip I settled on as a Falco main. I started using claw when I was learning Peach, since it made floating air attacks easier, and it felt right when transitioning to Falco. I love how easy it is to light-shield with the R-trigger, and jump-cancel shines. The rolling action that emerges for tech involving jump-cancelling feels natural.

I'm a fox main and I used to do claw only when I started. It was useful to get aerials out really fast like you said, but I was never able to get waveshining type tech down with claw. Anything where you would hit someone with shine and act out of it I couldn't do. There's that delay when you hit someone where you are stuck in shine for just a few frames and claw is so fast that it was never intuitive to me to wait long enough after the shine hits to jump. I got it almost right away after I switched to regular grip.

Now I switch between both a lot. Claw is still really good for things like fast bairs oos, uair timing since you can jump and start an uair at the same time and JC upsmash with Y + C-stick. But my consistency on shield pressure and wave shine tech is way better with normal grip. Plus with normal grip you can do the strum from Y to B stuff to SHDL and multishine, which I think is way easier than the weird rocking motion you have to do in claw.

Cool video! I think this stuff is super interesting

I used to snipe on call of duty too! Learned claw from COD about 5 years ago and haven't gone back since

As someone who plays fox and uses stock grip, i find stock has a lot of techniques to get over these problems. Short hop is something i had a lot of difficulty with in playing fox, but i found that swiping from x or y to a allows easier short hops since youre pressing a when fox is still in jump squat, it doesnt register the a press. With marth, swipe to a and then press a twice, marths sh is slow enough to take advantage with it

It's good to see that I'm not the only modified claw player out there. It's nice to find someone else out there who uses L, R, and Z with three separate fingers.

I'd show video proof, but I'd get flagged as spam for including a link.

I started playing melee on Netplay, and as such I used an XBox controller. Because I didn't know the button layout of the GameCube controller I bound jump to ZR (the button in the same spot as GameCube Z). When I started using a GameCube controller I was uses to using my index finger for jump, and so I started to play claw.

This sounds like some sort of superhero origin story, except that it's super lame.

I play the way you do and I've always called it Tri-claw. I started playing claw in melee for instant up airs on falcon and instant N-airs out of shield on Sheik. I actually started playing claw originally in Project M because Ganondorf has some crazy waveland shenanigans he can pull off if you input frame perfect instant aerials. Then I just started getting comfortable with it and loved the extra options, now I play with my ring finger on R for wavelands and wd out of shield. Now it feels really uncomfortable to play stock lol, love it.

I use stock but one quirk I have is moving the c-stick to perform moves with the bottom of my thumb/palm area when I need to hit left, and I'll stretch to it with my left thumb when I need to hit it right. I do this when doing things like wavedashing or hitting x in general when I can't move my thumb fast enough.

So I used to play COD also, and I didn't feel comfortable playing normally, so I "created" claw grip in my mind, not realizing it was a thing. It kind of carried over to when I started playing Smash 4 competitively and I found out about it when someone walked up and seemed surprised that I play claw. (Probably because I'm much younger so I'm more likely to play casually I guess) Anyway, i liked the video!
