I highly recommend watching the documentary "The Death of Superman Lives: What Happened?" It's actually a pretty interesting insight as to the various ideas that were conceived over the years with some really outlandish designs and story lines. As you find out, it was simply too ambitious for its time with an extremely crazy budget. Maybe down the line they can use some of those ideas and flesh them out in future DC films in a much more engaging and imaginative way.
