In this video, I lay out the basics of hotel star rating in Europe...This is only a guide to give you a starting point. Every country and in some place cities have their own interpretation, but as we glimpse at the basics it may give you starting expectation for what you are going to get for your dollar.

You are so correct that the ratings can vary from country to country. We usually look for 2 star if we are staying in a hotel, but usually try to use Airbnb as well.

Recent years we have more options to "see" a hotel, like hotel website to see pics online, people's review, friend's first hand experience, etc. Thanks for your informative video that explained it well.

I wonder if it is really that hard cut as sketched here. I have the feeling for example 3 star in the Netherlands is different than 3 star in Austria. Where Austria can have family owned 3 star hotels with limited basic rooms.

I try to check the evaluations of past users of the hotels, the ratings and my person requirement before booking. I guess everyone has a different view of what 'good, bad or ugly' about an experience. We've stayed in hotels not recommended by a number of people, but it suited our purpose and wondered why they scored it so low. My 3 might be someone else's 4 rating. It's all in how one perceives the experience I believe . Good references to double check. Always handy. The number of starts don't really bother me. It's not my main criterium. I don't always agree with the star accreditation given my own experiences. Food for thought. Well done. 👍🎥🌷🙋‍♀️
